Carotid Ultrasound
A carotid ultrasound is a non-invasive test that examines the blood vessels in the neck and evaluates blood flow to the brain. It can help detect plaque buildup and narrowing of carotid arteries that may affect blood flow to the brain causing ischemic stroke.
When Is the Test Needed?
A carotid ultrasound may be recommended when there is a reason to evaluate the carotid arteries, including:
- Previous TIA\stroke symptoms, such as one-sided facial weakness\numbness, speech difficulty, or transient vision loss
- An abnormal sound over the carotid artery(carotid bruit)
- Certain vascular risk factors, like diabetes or high cholesterol
- Known carotid artery disease requiring monitoring
How Is the Test Performed?
You will lie comfortably while gel is applied to your neck. A handheld ultrasound device is gently moved along the sides of the neck to produce images and assess blood flow. The examination is painless, non-invasive, and does not involve radiation.
Benefits
- Evaluates carotid arteries and blood flow
- Helps identify plaque and narrowing
- Non-invasive and painless
- No radiation exposure
